Plucking berries is one of the biggest passions for Finns. You pluck the most beautiful berries in Finland.
The small forest strawberries are called metsämansikka. They are so sweet you might think there are
some artificial additives. Actually it is the work of the midsummer night's sun, which makes everything more
sweet and fuller or taste.
I hope you can keep yourself from eating them all right away, because I am going to tell you some
things you can do with your berries.
Metsämansikkamaito (milk made of these strawberries) you make like this:
Take your saved strawberries that you might have put on a long straw of grass, like beads on a string,
and mash them a little in a glass. Add some sugar and cold milk. Enjoy!
With blueberries you can make mustikkapiirakka (blueberry pie). When you talk
about mustikkapiirakka, a Finn will get a dreamy look in his eyes. Mustikkapiirakka is Finnish summer.
Enjoyed with milk it is a genuine Finnish summer tradition!
